Named for the Nürburg Castle it encircles, the Nürburgring is widely considered the world’s most demanding race circuit and serves as the industry's proving ground for many high-performance vehicles. The circuit’s Nordschleife, or “North Loop,” stretches nearly 13 miles and consists of over 70 turns and a 1,000-foot difference in elevation. The average test run consists of one continuous lap around the Nordschleife track that showcases the limits of a vehicle’s performance.

Tesla first used the track for testing in 2019 with a prototype “Plaid” car that was developed in just a few weeks by an engineering pit crew designing, developing, and testing around the clock. In 2021 Tesla returned to the Nürburgring with this unmodified production Model S Plaid, featuring the production Plaid powertrain. The highest performance powertrain available for Tesla vehicles, its innovative design incorporated the first carbon-sleeved rotors used in a series-production EV, which help the motors produce peak power all the way to the vehicles’ top speed of 200 mph. This car completed its Nürburgring test lap with a time of 7:35.579 minutes and an average speed of 103 mph, setting a world record for fastest production EV lap.
