1972 McLaren M20
ENGINE: 8.1-liter Chevrolet V-8 (original engine)
HORSEPOWER: 750 (original engine)
NUMBER BUILT: 3
RACE SERIES: Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am)
Designed to compete with Porsche’s new 917/10K, the M20 was the last car McLaren would design for Can-Am before it pulled out of the series at the end of 1972. Drawing on McLaren’s extensive success with its M8 series, the M20 built upon elements of the company’s previous Can-Am cars and borrowed their orange and blue-accented livery. Though it shared a large rear wing and full-length fins with the M8F that it replaced, the M20 had stronger brakes, a wing across the front of the car, and a revised layout that concentrated the car’s weight within its wheelbase.
