Spurred by sponsor Goodyear’s desire to achieve a victory over rival Firestone, McLaren brought its orange livery to the Indianapolis 500 for the first time with the 1970 M15A. The first car McLaren developed for the race, the M15A combined Formula 1 design with that of the company’s Can-Am cars, borrowing features from both the M7B and M8 series. The placement of a fuel tank on each side of the car improved its weight distribution and gave it a uniquely bulbous profile. Peter Revson drove this M15A at the 1970 Indianapolis 500 after Denny Hulme withdrew from the race.
